A-TYPICAL SUMMER

How different is this summer from the previous ones? There are people who have an almost idyllic idea of summer, but those perfect postcards blur me with the idea of constant sweat in the city (extra negative point for the summer due to face mask), involuntary humidity and the separation anxiety from my favorite bulky sweaters and coats.

🕶 A-TYPICAL SUMMER 🏖

Like everything, popular culture has been responsible for inserting into our brains ideas that don’t match with reality, but from which we can copy some traits to live in a fantasy cloud even for a few hours or to strike a pose for the instagram photo.

And although this is the most a-typical summer and trips had to be postponed, there are a few objects, hobbies, details and gestures that make the season very worthwhile.

🎶 SUMMER BEATS 🎶

The tribute to disco divas by Jessie Ware in What’s Your Pleasure? or Women In Music Pt. III the new HAIM album with songs that I’d describe as “swinging in a makeshift hammock in August, with the sounds of the city in the background”.

✌🏽 BEAUTY 👄

Other important treasures: Lush tea tree tonic (antiseptic and an ally to refresh and hydrate oily skin) and the OUAI wave spray in case going you can’t go to the beach.

I love to fill my house with scents, but lighting a candle in summer makes me nauseous. Diptyque interior sprays are the solution to transport my small flat in Barcelona to a walk in the park under a fig tree, without the possibility of falling asleep due to the heat wave while a candle burns.

NOSTALGIA:

Esperemos./ There are seasons of my life where I prefer to watch movies that I already know, for some reason this is one of them. Alien, The Shining and Blade Runner or the 80 as a framework of life. Nostalgia is leading the aesthetics of our generation and in fact I recently read that in the 80s people were obsessed with the idea of purity and the smooth stage of the 50s, whereas we are now obsessed with the 80s. Will 2021 be seen as the golden stage of dreams in 2040? Let’s hope so.

👕 FASHION + READINGS 📘

I’m trying to buy less clothes, to tell the truth I think this is the first item I buy in 2020 (pandemic aside). I love the colors, the relaxed silhouette and the nods to the casual sexuality of Carne Bollente, a tiny French brand produced in Portugal.

Perdón por esto, pero alguien lo tenía que decir…/ PS: Fashion magazines and blogs have never talked about the terrible smell that lingers in the armpits of shirts, especially if you live very intense summers like the ones we have in the Mediterranean. Sorry about this, but someone had to say it …

I always put a book on things that make me happy, no matter if it’s a new title or something from the past

Our Share Of Night) by Mariana Enriquez: a story of black magic heritage between Argentina and London, passing through the 60s and 80s. It is a horror novel, but nostalgia, teenage adventures, the power of the ruling classes, love, rituals and the occult also coexist.

What gestures or things are you enjoying to rescue this rare summer?

  • What a satisfying read! You are right, this summer is certainly different. But all things considered, we should be grateful for what we have. I loved reading about your summer. I also enjoy eighties films. Terminator and Alien are among my all time fav films. Beautiful photos and collages. You have have such a great eye for.details. Looveee the photo with lemonds and flowers.

  • Hey Fungi!

I hope you are having lovely summer in Barcelona!
Thank you for great summer ideas with your great pictures!!
They inspire me, and I am excited to make plans for this different summer.

Your recommendation music is so great! Lately I signed up for Spotify, and it is easier than apple music!
I also love Blade Runner! It is so fantastic and cool movie! Unfortunately, The Shining was too scary for me, hahaha. However, Kubrick is one of my favorite director!
My favorite movies I can repeat to see are “Ieri, Oggi, Domani”.

Anyway, that shirt is so fabulous on you! I can’t stop to buy new clothes, but I would love to be slow to do it 🙂

    akiko

    • Thanks Akiko!

Summer here is a little bit odd… and humid! I heard it is also humid in Tokyo.

Hope you manage to find interesting plans for the summer! And I love Blade Runner so much, maybe you can check the second part that was released a few years ago 😉

And thanks! Now I would like to buy some linen for the last weeks of summer.

  • It’s crazy how this summer is so different. The hardest for me is to not have any plans, not knowing when I’ll be able to visit my family. It’s so annoying to not be able to look forward for next adventures.
But fortunately there is still a lot of fun things to do at home.
I love your colorful shirt. The colors are beautiful !
And I love all your compositions in this article. You’re so creative !
It also amazed me how we always look to the past. The new generation is obsessed with the 20’s. When us we’re more obsessed with the 80’s 90’s. It’s very funny !
It also reminds me of the movie “Midnight in Paris”.

    • Yes Margot! I’d say many of us had to cancel or move plans.

Sad to know that you won’t be able to visit France 🙁

And thanks about your compliments! ❤️ Trying some different stuff

  • Wow i totally love reading all of your summer list! You make this unpredictable summer looks so much lighter and fun! I love Jessie ware, her songs are perfect for summer nights. I also swear by the Avene eau thermale it is very refreshing and easy to bring everywhere. In tropical countries like ours summer also means eating seasonal fruits / produce.

    • Thanks dear!

And good to know you like Jessie Ware, she’s one of my current favorites.

And that Avene thermale water is ideal for extreme climates, also for winter with the dry skin!

  • Hey Pablo, how’s going your summer?
Judging by this post I could say you’ve managed to deal with it in the best way!
And since you’re planningo to go to Mallorca it seems gonna even improve in the next future!

For me, as a huge summer lover, this was the most boring summer ever: I love light clothing, playing with water, happy hours, travelling and basically living like a cat: almost having fun every night and drag lazily the day at the pool or on the terrace until the late afternoon…
I know I should learn to enjoy the little pleasures of the life like reading, listening music or watch a good movie, and I even usaully do, but for an energetic person like me the long, sunny summer days screams: stay outside and enjoy life!
This year I didn’t even doing very much shopping since I’m soooo bored….
Anyway this sumer went like this and that’s it, and at the end I’ve enjoyed too books and music (by te way I gonna check these songs and book asap) and my plants, really in few moths I’ve filled my home with every kind of plants! ^^
But, do you know that this summer I’m obsessed with 80’s too , especially music and movies (and the aesthetic obviously) ???!! I’ve tought it was just a thing of me, but when I’ve read your post I’ve been stunned! XD

Anyway I’m very jelous of your super stylish and unique house, OMG I want every design piece I see in your pics!

Well, enjoy your vacation, my friend, and have a lot of fun!

    • Hey Silvia, just coming back from the island and it was a bit odd, but at least I had the chance to disconnect from the city for a couple of days.

Hope you manage to find some interesting hobbies or new activities, despite it is difficult to keep creative after all these months, but gardening and collecting flowers and plans is so relaxing for the soul!

And yes, I am so obsessed with the 80s, but since I was a kid haha!

And thanks about the house, looking forward to add more interesting details to my place 🙂

  • I’ve been looking for a room spray too! Summer is definitely not the time for scented candles, but I still long for a nice, fresh, scent. I definitely want it light and fresh and non-toxic. Summer in the city is indeed not the most pleasure one, but who says we can’t make the best out of the situation? The Lush Tea Tree Tonic sounds interesting. I’ve been thinking about investing in something with tea tree to keep the mosquitos away, an oil or a simple spray would be perfect. Have a lovely week Pablo! Xx

    • Thanks Mia!

I really recommend you the Diptyque room sprays, they’re a little bit expensive but they last so long since you only need one or two pumps, and if you have a nice house you got it!

Let me know if you try some of the recommendations, like the Lush Tea Tree Toner 🙂

  • Is there a post of yours that I didn’t enjoy reading? Hell, no!

Honestly, so many good points made here. I kept nodding all along behind my computer screen. First of all, you are so right about magazines and blogs rarely ever talking about things like deodorants (probably not so glam?) and h-odor. From my experience, a badly formulated deodorant can actually ruin your clothes (some textiles are more prone to that than others; I plan to write something on this topic soon, not sure if people like that kind of content or not though :-D). I cannot wait to reunite with my favorite sweaters and leather jackets too. As for the movies, I am the same – there are certain times when all I want is to re-watch some oldies (plus I already know the ending). Lately I have been enjoying some 90s films like You’ve Got Mail or something much older like Casablanca. If you like the Shining, you need to watch Doctor Sleep! It is a 2019 sequel and I quite liked it (spooky, but also a bit esoteric and peculiar in a way) xx

    Naya
    http://www.nayatilly.com

    • THANK YOU SO MUCH NAYA! This totally made my day ❤️ Can’t thank you enough for your constant support.

The problem with deodorant is so common, I’m trying a new one by Malin and goetz and it works pretty good so far! Let me know if you write something about this controvertial topic.

And 90s films are also really good! Specially romantic comedies… And I’ll check Dr. Sleep for sure, currently on my TO WATCH LIST

  • Oh I have a love-hate relationship with summer. Love the sunshine, plants, getting to the beach and getting out more. But HATE humidity, how much noisier summer is then winter and the bugs. But mainly the humidity. I did not know it was humid there. I thought most of Europe had lower humidity. A good portion of the States is quite humid in the summer.

Separation anxiety from my sweaters lol. I will have to check out this disco music and The Shining is a GREAT movie! I have watched The Devil Wears Prada so many times I lost count LOL. And last week was the first time I shopped for clothes since the end of January.

    Allie of
    http://www.allienyc.com

    • Thank you Allie!

Yes, humidity here is so terrible, 90% during July and now with the face mask… haha

And The Devil Wears Prada is definitely one of my favorites! I should watch it tonight!

  • Hey Fungi!

So funny…the smell of armpit sweat made me laugh! hahaha I’m kind of glad magazines and blogs don’t cover this topic. haha!

I’m constantly listening to music! My sis makes fun of me for it. She says I’m constantly wearing these headphones. Music always keeps me light and happy 🙂

Can’t wait to see photos from your trip!

    http://www.fashionradi.com

    • Thanks for stopping by Radi!

Yes, the smell of an armpit is such a problem in this humid region haha.

      Take care!

  • Hi Pablo I always love reading your posts, they are so aesthetic and chic.
It is so interesting to read how different this summer is for everyone, thanks for sharing yours with us 🙂
I’ve also rewatched and reread a couple of old movies/books and enjoyed the nostalgia feeling. As if everything would be more okay while I watch my childhood/teenage heroes

    have a fab day,

Rewatching and rereading things from our childhood could help a lot these days right?

      Have a great weekend!

  • Lovely article. Your outfit looks great love the soft colours they are perfect for hot summer days. The products look great and your house looks so beautiful. I hope you enjoy the book I don’t like horror stories and my favourite movies that I have seen over and over again are Romeo and Juliet Old and New version and Gone with the Wind Love both. Enjoy summer Cris
