THE TEETOTAL TREND (OR HOW TO STOP DRINKING ALCOHOL)

I don’t consider myself an alcoholic and I don’t drink very often, I prefer to reserve my empty calories for cakes, cookies and other fiendish vices that kindly been granted the label of ‘dessert’… although from time to time a few shots of tequila are acceptable in my body to the rhythm of a catchy ABBA song.

A few days ago I read an article in Vanity Fair Spain “Why is fashionable not to drink alcohol?”, yes, it seems that a new “healthy” trend has arrived to be called the new veganism and it goes beyond eating healthy and exercising. Perhaps this movement seems a bit strange today, but a few years ago vegetarianism was also considered a crazy thing and nowadays is a widely accepted option.

¡Ah! Casi olvido mencionar que JLo jamás tendrá que enfrentarse a la resaca y a la amnesia etílica./ Characters like Jennifer Lopez, Jared Leton and Gerard Butler have joined the movement and they call themselves teetotalers; the result? a great look and a skin that seems to have been subjected to a hard editing process in Photoshop (and what about their livers? Imagine if their livers were visible, probably they would have more likes than me on Instagram!). Ah! I almost forgot to mention that JLo will never have to face a hangover and the alcoholic amnesia.

Well this is not such a surprising trend… after vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians and fake celiacs (yes, those who desperately look for gluten-free cereal to avoid judgement) it was clear that something new had to appear, and then the teetotalers arrived, ready to come out of closet and stop being seen as misfits.

¿Y tú eres un alcohólico empedernido?, ¿un bebedor social?, ¿un abstemio?/ By the way, could somebody stop the train of trends? When I’m trying to get into the cool something newer appears. Hey, let’s go a little slower. And what about you? Are you a social drinker, an alcoholic or a teetotaler?

  • Hi Pablo! first of all thank you very much for visiting my site. Felt so stoked receiving a thoughtful comment from you! I love everything in your blog, both your words and your talent in visual arts. Keep inspiring people like me and nope, not a social drinker/an alcoholic or a teetotaler. I do drink alcohol very rarely and I'm now trying to drink a healthier option. Thanks a lot for igniting such a wonderful thought for us to ponder. love from the Philippines! I'm your new fan/follower hehehee lol

    love lots,

    • Hi again, Tin! You're so sweet and you definitely made my day with this comment!

Hope we can keep in touch and thanks for letting me know your opinion about the topic!

I'll visit your blog back soon!

      Best regards from Spain! xx

  • Well, this seems like a nice trend! I sometimes think that people are getting to crazy about 'healthy food' and take things too far…but that being said, people drink way too much in the West (and young people drink soooo much!) so a trend like this one is perhaps something we need. If this trend (and celebrities) encourages someone to stop drinking, all the better!

I haven't had a drop of alcohol for years (ever since I was diagnosed with Chron) and I can't say that I miss it. However, I must say that if there weren't medical reasons, I would probably drink wine, at least a sip a day. In my region it is customary to drink wine after lunch (my parents always do it) but I probably wouldn't be a social drinker. I never drank when I used to go clubbing, because I never felt that I needed it to relax, but I do remember of having more drinks than I should for friend's birthdays (I'm not sure why we would always drink so much when celebrating birthday's together)….so, if I could I would opt for red wine because I believe it is healthy (in moderation naturally!!).

I absolutely love your illustration. Such a gorgeous girl, love her pose and attitude!

    Have a great day!

    • Hey Ivana! Thanks for your comment and for letting me what you think about this topic! Some people like this trend and some people don't…. I mean it all depends, if you do it because you want to improve your health for me is more than correct, but just because of the trend is kinda dumb, however…

I can tag myself as a social drinker, but as you I have never felt that I needed alcohol to relax or release my wild spirit, I think you can have tons of fun without a drop of alcohol, it all depends on the music actually!

      Thanks a lot again 😀

  • Hahahaha! You made me laugh by saying that you save your calories for desserts and take shots of tequila once in a while, just like you I rarely drink unless it is wine. I think this is the new black because who doesn't want a youthful look when they are older? I think this should be our new mantra. I nominated you for the leibster award on my website.

    • Hey dear Meron! I just saw the nomination, you made my day, dear :D!

And yes, wine is always the best option to get sh*tty in the most proper and elegant way, jaja!

  • Hey Pablo,
Another lovely post from you. I'm happy to say I'm neither of these things (staying away from trends like these :)) Just happily enjoying life without the alcohol or crazy diets!
Thank you for your support on my blog. I hope you have a wonderful day. Take care!

  • Hi Pablo,

I hopped over here from Ivana's blog and I love your site as soon as I saw your illustration. I like it that your posts have got English translation which is almost 100% accurate. This is informative yet in a very personable manner. Oh yes, alcohol had added calories but sometimes I still continue to drink them during occasions.

    Un besito Pablo ❤
