THINGS I’VE LEARNED AS AN ILLUSTRATOR

I receive a lot of comments and emails of people asking me about my creative process and the method I use to illustrate; so I started to think of everything I have learned over the years about illustration, between brushes, chalks and Photoshop layers.

Being an illustrator is a job that I really love, there is always a possibility to inspire and empower others and each new project is an opportunity to explore new worlds and messages: Colors? Shapes? What is the guiding concept? Textures? Method? The possibilities are endless and it all starts with a sketch. However, not everything is hunky-dory when it comes to art and design. These are the 5 things I’ve learned as an illustrator, maybe some of them can be related to other creative industry jobs:

Todo trabajo creativo involucra concepto, investigación, prueba y error y también ejecución; donde la tarea más importante es sintetizar un sinnúmero de detalles y comunicar, no sólo verse ‘bonito’./ Many customers think it’s just about sketches, but it goes beyond: designers don’t own a magic wand and there is no button in Photoshop to execute immediate things. Every creative project involves concepts, research, trial and error and execution; where the most important task is to synthesize a great number of details and communicate a message, is not only about ‘looking cool and nice’.

2. El presupuesto/ The budget:
Sólo una cosa: nunca abarates tu trabajo, dale el valor que merece./ One of my biggest concerns since my graduation, but I’m starting to dominate it little by little. Nobody at school teaches you how to estimate costs for the real world, and although there are some countries or creative job where prices are more ‘standardized’, it is a very elastic concept but you’ll dominate it sooner or later. Just one thing: give the right value to your work, if you’re good at it you deserve the best!

3. Más que ‘diseño’/ More than ‘design’:
I studied Graphic Design in Mexico and now I’m doing a Business Design course in Barcelona. Design students are not only learning about Photoshop, there are actually a lot of subjects and weapons involved in creative projects: Marketing, Communications, Semiotics, History of Art, etc. At the end each one plays a vital role and there is a lot of work behind that image that captivates you so much.

4. Recursos infinitos/ Infinite resources:
¿Qué esperas para probar?/ The best thing about being an illustrator is that resources are unlimited. Go and look beyond Photoshop! The possibilities never end, you can do anything as an illustrator: scan torn paper, ink stains, take photos and then draw over them, make sketches by hand and then pass them to digital. Don’t be afraid to try!

5. Toma tiempo definir un estilo/ It takes time to define your own style:
A mi me tomó años encontrar la personalidad de mi trabajo./ I’ve been drawing since I can remember and I decided to ‘professionalize’ my skills more or less in 2009. If you take a look at my first illustrations I’m sure you won’t relate them with my current style. It takes time to define a style and to feel comfortable with it. If you’re in this phase trying to find those traits that can define your work, please don’t give up! It took me years to find the personality of my work.

  • I still haven't find my definite style when it comes to illustrating, right now I'm experimenting a lot, I have a few different styles of illustrating and think that only with time I will find the one that will be 'it' for me. The same goes for painting, I like painting with oil paints but there is still a lot I need to learn. Style is something that seems to happen on its own, but only after lot of work is put into it.

I really liked your advices, they were great. I think that young artists will find them very useful. Setting a right price for one's work is important. Naturally, in the very begginging, it doesn't have to be sky high but at the same time it should reflect the hours put into it. The clients need to know that illustrations aren't created just like that, it is not something that can be done in a few minutes.

It is important to take time to work on a certain idea. Nothing happens over night. Sketches are only a part of a process, but I realized that the more I sketch, more am I motivated to turn those sketches into something more meaningful.

In addition, I'm sure that people will be interested in reading them because many people want to know more about illustrating process. I know that many people are curious about what the creative process looks like.

    • Hi Ivana! As I told you in your blog, keep practicing, 'cause at the end practice makes perfect, try every single possibility until you find that 'essence' you've been looking for!

      Best regards from Barcelona!
      Pablo

  • Hi Pablo! I had no idea that you studied graphic design, dear – you're so good at it, so keep it doing, I see that you're creating your "little masterpieces" from passion, what's in my opinion is the most important thing, when it comes to creative works. I totally agree with you that illustration is something more than a sketch, dear:)

      Besos a Chile!

  • Hola Pablo 🙂
