PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE… WHAT?!

Have you heard about the term ‘Planned Obsolescence’? Yes, that demon disguised as iPhone 10S Plus Ultra Slim Edge G with anti fat camera that threatens to displace your current cellphone (acquired 6 months ago) in order to turn it into a relic worthy of being sought by American Pickers. If you want to see it in a different way it is when companies shorten the life of a product with premeditation so us, as consumers have to buy a new one, in a process where the steps ‘buy’ and ‘throw away’ are repeated endlessly.

¡Oigan no se rían de mi, yo sigo con un iPhone 4S que a pesar de las algunas fallas funciona de maravilla!/ Planned obsolescence has many consequences for the environment and for our wallet, plus it put us in robot mode and we start to lose our minds when that new gadget appears in stores… Hey don’t laugh at me, I still have an iPhone 4S that despite some flaw still works great!

From the car to the printer, to your laptop (my Mackbook is turning 7 years old and I live in fear that one day it could explode) we can conclude that the products do not last as before. Remember how the Nokia 1100 was almost impossible to destroy? It used to resist the most violent fall and its battery used to survive for days!

And although the task to find that printer that will last many years seems increasingly difficult, I’m sure there are some effective tricks to save your credit card: taking care from the very first moment of your laptop and repair things before throwing them away, also if you have the possibility to invest in a high quality gadget could be a great option… Although it seems that in modern times we also have to resist some sensual temptations, you know: Steve Jobs whispering from paradise and showing you the new iPhone, ‘yes you need it’, ‘yes make a wish and buy it’… Hold on, I’ll go for my credit card right now!

  • The problem is that it is hard to find a high quality device of any kind because manufacturers make them to last only a few years! Naturally, they do this on purpose so that we would buy the new ones. As soon as the warranty expires, our cellphone and laptops are over with. Every cellphone malfunctions after 2 years now. They are purposely made that way! Remember those old Nokia cellphones that were indestructible? They could last 10 years and even if you dropped them in the sea ( freaking sea with salt and everything that should destroy it) they would still work. The old phones are very valuable now and can be sold for a lot of money because they are the only ones that government can't monitor…I wish I saved my old ones! Don't we all!

    I really love your collages!!!!

    • Hey Ivana, yes! It is almost impossible to find a high quality device as you said, I would definitely have to buy an old Nokia on eBay haha, they're still indestructible and will work perfectly, more than the newest iPhone… Hope I can take myself selfies with it, haha!

  • Hola Pablo!

Technology these days is constantly innovating which is crazy because once you get a new phone/computer, next thing you know is that another one is coming out in a few months and you already want to get your hands on it. Life used to be so much simpler 🙂

    Have a wonderful day!
    Talk to you soon!

  • Hola Pablo! Como estas? I hope that everything is fine on your side, dear!
What about your post, I totally agree with you that planned obsolescence is really bad phenomenom, which is happening right now. Finding high quality devices, which will last at least more than 2 years sounds like "mission-impossible" nowadays, because companies produce newer and newer things, with higher technology, but on the other hand – someone has to buy them so everything, what we buy have to have shorten life, unfortunately!

    Have a lovely evening, Pablo!

    • Everything is going right! I'm glad to hear/read you in Spanish, keep doing the great effort to learn, dear!

And yes, it is 'mission-impossible' to find that dreamy gadget! But well, let's try to do our best saving money!

  • Hola Pablo!

    ¡Beso!

  • Hahahaha! Steve Jobs whispering from paradise…..You always make me laugh every time I read your posts Pablo,You are great at taking care of things if you still have the Iphone 4s and your Mac Pro book turning 7 years….damn!! You are right about current gadgets not lasting as compared to the ones from back then. Don't dare use that credit card dear!!
