MEET THE CHARACTER: ADRIANA GASTÉLUM FROM FAKE LEATHER

In a world where the word blogger has acquired negative connotations, Adriana Gastélum stands out with FAKE LEATHERa blog of real inspiration that leaves aside impossible outfits. Adriana’s merit stands out from the first glance: every post is almost an editorial and yet, far from play down fashion, she knows how to land it with the help of her photographer boyfriend.

¿Listos para conocer más de ella?/ Adriana also writes and each of her outfits tells a story between basics with an unexpected twist, oversized sunnies, bags that are a statement of style and a lot of leather (honoring the name of the blog). A few days ago I shared lunch with Adriana in Barcelona and she told me a bit more about her style, her motivations and some secrets. Are you ready to know a more about her?

Adriana is a graphic designer by profession, and once she left aside the idea of studying fashion because “you can not live on it”. Fake Leather began as an informal blog between school projects until her first collaboration… Yes, the democratization of fashion was just the beginning and also her adventure as a blogger was just starting, keeping her earliest memories about fashion in her grandmother’s sewing machine and in her Lolita phase (no, she has no regrets about it).

Entonces sólo le digo que estoy bien y que ropa no me falta”./ Adriana’s success goes beyond her collaborations and the numbers on her social media; the idea of knowing that it is possible to live on something she never planned and the interaction with her followers is even more valuable than a Chanel Boy bag and yet it is impossible to explain to her family that being a fashion blogger is THE BIG DEAL: “My mom says… well, she’s model but she’s not a model. Then I just tell her that I’m fine and that I have enough clothes”.

Adriana, no te juzgaremos, somos iguales. Her mission with Fake Leather? “Make people realize that it is not necessary buying new things and spending too much, I still wear some clothes that I have for 5 years and as a blogger I want people to see me as a normal girl, the one who takes the metro and makes breakfast, please if you see me on the street say hi!”. Although she has confessed that if her clothes could talk they would point her as a disorganized and bad mother… Adriana, we won’t judge you, we are the same. Added to this, Adriana considers that the biggest challenge for bloggers is always to try to improve: “Since you are your own boss, you can stucked, so it is important to give a twist to every post and not only share a simple OOTD”.

And talking about the formula of how to stand out in the blogger world (something like the philosopher’s stone in its millennial version), I’m sorry to tell you this but Adriana thinks the same thing as me: “You have to have a blog for the right reasons. I receive a lot of emails with the question ‘How long will it take for me to gain followers?’ A few years ago people started blogs with the intention of getting another job (like Andy Torres from Style Scrapbook, for example), now with the boom of Influencers the prospects have changed…”

What is Adriana’s favorite thing about fashion? That immediate connection with people who like it. “It’s like when you love a type of music and suddenly you find someone who likes the same songs”. What she hates the most? The prejudice of people about fashion, some of them see it as a mere superficiality, since not all people in this world necessarily is. “Sometimes people laugh at something that they themselves would end up wearing on in a few years”.

Among Adriana’s plans for Fake Leather are to travel more and include a second person on the blog, but with a different profil to her to show that fashion is for everyone.

Reading Adriana’s blog makes us want to try that combination that seemed impossible, to live fashion and to celebrate that we live in an era where blogs exist.

  • Me encanto tu entrevista!

  • such a great interview! Adriana looks really familiar to me, I think I knew her from lookbook…How cool that she's also from Mexico and living in Barcelona. I'm not surprised she is looking forward to getting her VISA and being able to finally settle. I have the same problem here, this week I've been running like crazy trying to get all the papers to register my stay again in BIH. There are literally 100 papers and permits I need to get, and my hubby too, every year it is the same thing- supposedly next year I might get citizenship on account of some new law that says you can get it after five years of marriage- we'll see:)

I absolutely loved your collages of Adriana. She seems such a sweet person! That illustration of her is wonderful. I always love when you share other bloggers with us, as you know I love blogger recommendations!

    • Hey Ivana! Thanks for your sweet comment!

Yes, I think Adriana is quite famous on Lookbook, so maybe you have seen her there! And yes, this legal stuff and getting visa and residence permit is such a mess, but not impossible, hope you get yours as soon as possible! I'm in the same situation so imagine one year living in Spain and my process is not complete jet, so just be patient!

Thanks for the comment about the collages and the illustrations, you're an inspiration, dear!

  • Hola Pablo! 🙂

  • Me encanta Adriana!

  • Hola Pablo! I haven't know this blogger before and after reading your post (which btw is really well-written) I'm so happy that you decided to write about her, I'm sure that your lunch with Adriana was delightful, she seems normal and unimposing girl, who achieved huge success in fashion world 🙂 I love that she shows to buy less and wear clothes more.
Have a lovely evening, Pablo! 🙂

  • Hola Pablito tantas lunas!
